ThemeScapes, Inc. Rockwork

Rock formations can be colored to match any stone type or color scheme.

Artificial rocks are created using a variety of materials. ThemeScapes has utilized the following:

Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC)
ThemeScapes management pioneered GFRC rockwork in 1978. Because of its highly realistic look, we have focused on this system ever since. ThemeScapes has 40 large (7' X 7') molds created from actual rock cliffs plus another 22 boulder molds. Our primary textures are basalt and limestone. We have installed hundreds of thousands of square feet of GFRC rockwork. (In addition ThemeScapes has six different types of tree molds for GFRC use).

Molded Plaster
Molds are used to cast plaster rock castings. Plaster rockwork has limited use, as it is unsuitable with water.

Shotcrete Carved Rock
Shotcrete sprays onto mesh and steel is the most common method of creating artificial rocks and trees. It is most effective in outdoor or large interior exhibits, including mud banks and pond bottoms. It can be durable, effective and efficient. The end results are completely dependent on the skills of the carver. It is also messy, thick and heavy.

Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP)
Utilizes the same molds in GFRC and molded plaster. Resin can be inherently fire resistant. Finished product is thin and light weight and authentic in appearance. This method is especially appropriate where weight is a concern.

Urethane Plastic Castings
Molded from rock molds, urethane is very similar to FRP in appearance, weight and use. ThemeScapes has developed a molded "soft" rock constructed from urethane foam and elastomer.
